Emma is right, there are still problems with 3g-modems, especially setting up within linux ;)
Even if the mobile-providers offers a flat rate, it is still more expensive than a Wifi-Spot at home. This idea of McDonalds or Starbucks to charge for WLAN through a credit-system (buy credits) might be very expensive and I dont support that! Here in Vienna are some areas where you can use public WLAN for free, even in a restaurant, digital museum...
Even 3g-modems use HDSPA and UMTS with a max. download of 7,x mbit, it is still half fast and therefore slower than an 11Mbit WLAN. Furthermore you can never use the full 7,x mbit of a 3g-modem because of the always existing overhead of any mobile-connection (many more control bits than within a WLAN-connection), this is why it is still expensive even prices (service-charges) decrease here in Vienna every 3 to 6months.
But dont forget: if you are on landscape and do have the wrong provider who dont cover all the regions with its antennas, then you are in same position as with WLANs (no access to any Hotspot ;)

Please check my homepage www.ipmccc.at.tf (will be online within 2010) regularly for an upcoming WLAN-idea (project) to support the WLAN-Hotspot distribution, even this my idea needs 2, 3 or more years.

Have a good day,

I'm not so sure ... I've got a 3 dongle as well. It rarely gets a decent connection (currently about the same as dialup in Mid Somerset)
I've occasionally had it up to 500 K - but that's not that common.
I'd have thought that Wifi hotspots are here to stay for a while yet - especially outside the major cities. (Also - cost; currently most USB dongles aren't cheap for the service; Wifi tends to be either free, or a flat rate/ day/hour, rather than a monthly fee for a set max download.

Long term, maybe, but I don't see Wifi Hotspots stopping for some time to come.
