Things are starting to get serious
2 Nov
I’ve had an Acer Aspire One for quite some time now but have yet to write anything about it. In fact I was one of the stupid few who rushed out on UK launch day to make sure I had one of those dinky little netbooks, only to find out a few days later the retail price would drop by over 20%. Lesson learned.
To be honest I was a little underwhelmed by the One at first with it’s restrictive operating system, totally locked down interface and very little information on hand to make it perform as it should. However the biggest dissappointment with the One was the lack of support for 3G modems.
I’ve been a 3 mobile internet user for about 9 months now, it’s a handy little device especially while commuting on the train much like the Aspire One. Finally it would seem Acer have pulled their finger out and got the two to work hand in hand. It’s not as easy as I thought it would be so here is how i did it:
1. Update the Aspire One using the ‘Live Update’ application in the ‘Settings’ section. If you have not already installed the patch it will show as an optional update at the bottom of the updates list so tick the box and let the One do it’s thing.
2. Once the updates are complete reboot the One. When it has loaded up again click on the blue triangle in the ‘Connect’ quick link section. You should now see a new application to open called ‘Mobile Partner’.
3. Once ‘Mobile Partner’ has loaded plug in your USB modem (mine is the Huawei E220 from 3) and if everything has worked you after a few seconds you should see a popup to say that the device is recognised and is checking the status of the USIM. In the bottom left you will notice the network signal strength and operator.
4. This is the only difficult part, up until now eveything was plug and play. Select ‘Tools > Options’ from the menu and then select ‘Profile Management’ on the left. You will need to create a new profile and input the details as shown in the screenshot below. Please Note: These are the settings for the 3 UK mobile network, however the only difference on other networks should be the APN.
5. Save the profile and make sure it is ‘Set as Default’ before returning to the main screen. Click the ‘Connect’ button and fingers crossed after a few seconds you will be connected and able to access the Internet as normal.
I’ve not had chance to fully test out the newly support 3G functionality of the Aspire One, and I can see that there are still a few things that need tidying up however at least now I don’t need to drag my Windows brick around just to work on the train.

Thanks for easy instructions i was wondering how to set things up
You are more than welcome. It will seem so simple once it’s done but even I was confused on how this worked before now.
Thanks for the instructions, but I can’t get it to work. I’ve got a E220 as well (from T-mobile). I’ve downloaded the new software and started it up. I plug in the E220 and get a “Device found. Please wait.” message. After a few seconds I get “The device has been disconnected or is unavailable.”
I’ve tried all 3 USB ports. The modem works fine on a WinXP laptop a few inches away. Any ideas?
Hello,
I have the same problem as JohnR - only with one difference: First it worked, but then I have used the live update, and now it doesn’t work. I think the problem is the actual huawei patch.
Hi. This looks really useful but I can’t actually get an internet connection at all! I’m using T-mobile but it won’t even set up a connection. Any ideas? I’ve searched for moden drivers but it’s a nightmare!
Acer Aspire One 150L 120Gb, 512mB running Linpus linux lite.
I’m a complete Linux novice and found most sites assumed a lot of knowledge to get the E220 working on the AAO. I scoured for hours today trying to find an easy solution and eventually came across a tutorial that I followed exactly with the result that I’m now connected and writing this on my AAO.
Most sites start off by saying “connect to Liveupdate first” - this is great if you have a wifi connection but not great for me with only a three 3g dongle that won’t connect - a sort of chicken & egg situation.
Cutting a long story short - use this tutorial and you will be connected with the minimum of fuss if you follow it exactly.

Hope this helps some others.
Dont forget to update your firmware for Huawei E220. You will find it on your mobile providers website. No need for running the terminal. I have the Swedish provider Telia.
Uppdatera firmware till Huaweimodemet på Telias hemsida för mobilt bredband. Gör sen som ovan, skriv in Telia connect, statisk APN, online.telia.se.

I made firmware update succesfully to Huawei E220: after the update firmware is 11.117.09.04.00 and Mobile Partner works well with E220.
I had the disconnect problem until I followed Staffans advise and upgraded the E220 Huawei firmware.
After that the AA1 (with the updated Linpus) saw the storage on the modem and connected to the Internet via the modem. Sweet

OMG. Thanks so mucuh!! I followed this before and it didn’t work…
We used to use a wireless network but today (XMAS DAY) they’ve put a password on it, so we where buggered.
Followed this again and it’s worked. Your a ledgend!!
Hi,
I’m having the disconnect problem too. DL’d the “Huawei CM” patch from Acer today, Christmas Day 2008, and upgraded my E220 using the “E220 Client Software HOSTB107D05SP00C03 for WinXP&2K&Vista 05-Sep-2008″ from http://www.huawei.com/mobileweb/en/doc/list.do?type=-1&id=736. I ran the upgrade on a Vista Laptop, and it seemed to work fine.
As other posters have found, my modem works fine with Vista (both before and after the flashing).
I wondered if it was a power problem so I tried external power to the second USB plug, but no help… Also tried turning off the Aspire’s wifi, (the little switch under the RH end of the near edge toggles WiFi on and off: orange LED is lit when WiFi is on), and that didn’t help either. Looks like current Aspire module doesn’t work with current Huawei firmware?
Kim,
According to my mobile broadband provider (Telia.se), upgrade of Huawei firmware is possible only on OS WinXP or Win2K. Did the Huawei 220 client software include the firmware? Have you visited your mobile providers website for downloading firmware? My AA1 Linux works fine.

Hi Staffan, thanks for comment. But yes, I believe the firmware was upgraded. Certainly some version number increased during the upgrade. And the webpage I loaded the upgrade from did include Vista in the OS list.
By the way, found something wonderful: modem ***works OK***, if you plug it in b4 a reboot. That seems to be the magic to spring it into life. [In all previous testing, I plugged in after running the Mobile Partner software. Clearly that was a bad idea!]
By the way, for UK t-mobile, I used APN: general.t-mobile.uk, and set Authentication protocol to PAP. CHAP didn’t work for me.
Just followed whitepug’s very clear instructions and my 3 dongle worked first time.
Many thanks, especially for the screen shots showing how to configure the Mobile Partner profile.
Cheers
Just followed John’s excellent instructions - the most annoying part being the time it took to download all the updates (clearly a lot of people must have got AA1s and/or 3G dongles this Christmas!)
The dongle is now recognised, and I can connect to the 3 network (according to the Mobile Partner), Oddly, I can’t then get the browser (the standard install Firefox 2.0) to connect to the internet!
I am sure that I have missed something simple - can anyone point me in the right direction? Cheers
Excellent - worked a treat on Acer Apsire with E156g USB modem. Had to send this to the user :-
Switch on - go to the connect section - click the blue arrow (more)
Click ‘Mobile Partner’ It will initialize and detect the sim then the device ..
wait !!!
Next to profile name “3 USB Modem” click ‘connect’
If the device is not recognised, just unplug the USB modem and re-connect.
Once connected - Minimise the mobile partner, and click the ‘browser’ icon.
Always disonnect or shut down when finished.
You can top up - here http://www.three.co.uk/Home - go to ‘my 3′
enter 0788*****
password ***** - you can change the password under ‘my security’

That took 3 hours to update and 2 hours getting my head round it, took a lot of googling !!
Happy New Year
john
I have just received a 3 broadband dongle (E156g) which is not supported by the Mobile Partner software according to the site. when I plug it into my Acer Aspire netbook it sees it as an E220 and having set up the account using your excellent instructions it works like a dream. Many thanks. Trevor
